How Jewelry Brands Get Found in AI Search: GEO and AEO

Short answer: Customers increasingly ask an AI assistant instead of scanning search results, and the assistant answers from what the wider web says about you rather than from what your homepage claims. Getting found now means three things: being answerable, so your pages contain clean, extractable answers to real questions; being citable, so your content carries specific figures, named sources and dates a model can safely reuse; and being corroborated, so the same facts about your brand appear consistently across many places. Ranking is no longer the finish line. Being named in the answer is.

The number that should change your plan

Sixty eight percent of United States Google searches ended without any click between January and April 2026, up from just over sixty percent in 2024. AI Overviews now appear on more than a fifth of searches, and when one appears, click through rates fall by close to sixty percent (SparkToro and Similarweb, via Search Engine Land).

Read that as a jeweler rather than as a marketer. Your customer types "difference between a hidden halo and a regular halo" or "can you resize a full eternity band". Two years ago that question produced ten links and you could compete for one of them. Now it frequently produces an answer, assembled partly from your page, with no visit to your site at all.

McKinsey and the Business of Fashion put the same shift in one line in The State of Fashion 2026: AI chatbot responses are becoming the new search engine optimization.

This is not the end of content marketing. It is a change in what content is for. It used to be bait for a click. It is now supply for an answer, and the reward is being named in that answer.

Three disciplines, clearly separated

The vocabulary is new and often muddled, so here are the working definitions.

SEO, search engine optimization. Getting your pages ranked in a list of results. Still functioning, still worth doing, and the foundation the other two are built on. A page nothing can find is a page nothing can quote.

AEO, answer engine optimization. Structuring content so a machine can extract a clean, complete answer from it. This is about format: direct answers near the top, question shaped headings, FAQ blocks, structured data, one idea per section.

GEO, generative engine optimization. Earning a mention inside a generated answer. This is about substance and corroboration: specific numbers, named sources, original data, consistent facts about your brand repeated across the wider web.

You need all three, and they reward different work. AEO is largely something you do to your pages. GEO is largely something you earn off them.

The AEO checklist

Ten changes, most of which take an afternoon per page.

  1. Answer in the first sixty words. Directly, completely, before any preamble. If a machine has to read four paragraphs of brand voice to find the answer, it will read someone else's page instead.

  2. Write headings as the questions people ask. "Can a full eternity band be resized?" outperforms "Resizing considerations" for both humans and machines.

  3. One idea per section. Extraction works on self contained blocks. A section that answers three questions at once answers none of them cleanly.

  4. Add a real FAQ block. Five to eight genuine customer questions per page, answered in two to four sentences each.

  5. Mark it up. FAQPage, Article, Product and Organization schema. Structured data tells a machine what your content is rather than making it infer.

  6. Use tables for comparisons. Rows and columns are the most extractable format that exists.

  7. Define your terms. A one sentence definition of every technical term, in plain language. Jewelry is dense with jargon and this is free ground.

  8. Date everything. Publication and update dates, visibly. Freshness affects whether an answer engine trusts a page.

  9. Keep the answer on the page. Do not put the substance behind a form, a video with no transcript, or an image of text.

  10. Say the specific thing. "Most full eternity bands cannot be resized because the stones run the full circumference" is quotable. "Resizing depends on many factors" is not.

The GEO checklist

Harder, slower, and the part almost nobody is doing properly yet.

Publish numbers only you have. Aggregate data from your own operation, anonymized: which stone shapes are gaining share, how bespoke lead times move by season, what percentage of configured rings change metal at the last step. Models cite specifics. Original specifics have no competitor.

Name your sources with dates. A page that cites named studies with years reads as trustworthy to an evaluation system, and it also earns citations from other writers, which is the corroboration loop that actually drives visibility.

Be consistently described everywhere. The same description of your company, the same locations, the same specialisms, on your site, your LinkedIn, your directory listings, your press mentions, your partner pages. Models build an entity picture from repetition and agreement. Inconsistency is not neutral, it is dilution.

Get mentioned where models read. Industry publications, trade associations, comparison and roundup pages, forums where your customers actually talk, partner and supplier sites. An answer engine reaching for a recommendation weights what other sources say about you far more heavily than what you say about yourself.

Answer the questions nobody has answered well. Look for the queries where AI answers are currently vague or wrong in your category. That gap is the opening, and in jewelry there are many of them, because much of the category's genuine expertise has never been written down in public.

Keep pages current. An updated date and a real update. Stale pages lose citation share quickly.

What this looks like specifically for jewelry

Three characteristics of this category make it unusually winnable.

Enormous unanswered question volume. Care, sizing, metals, settings, stone quality, ethics and sourcing, insurance, resizing, repair, hallmarking. Thousands of real questions, most currently answered by thin content written by people who have never sat at a bench.

Genuine expertise concentrated in businesses that do not publish. The people who actually know are in workshops and behind counters. Almost none of that knowledge is written down publicly. The first jeweler in a niche to publish it properly gets cited for years.

High consideration purchase, long research cycle. A buyer spends weeks researching an engagement ring. Being the source the assistant quotes at week one shapes where they buy at week six, even without a click at week one.

The uncomfortable implication: your best content should answer questions completely, including the ones whose honest answer is "you probably do not need to spend more here". Hedged, self serving answers do not get quoted. They read as marketing to a machine that has read a great deal of marketing.

How to measure it

Traditional analytics will not show you this, because the whole phenomenon is defined by the absence of a click. Track four things instead.

  1. Assistant visibility. Ask the major AI assistants the twenty questions your customers ask, monthly, and record whether you are named. Twenty prompts, once a month, in a spreadsheet. It is unglamorous and it is the only direct measurement.

  2. Referral traffic from AI sources. Small in volume, usually high in intent. Segment it and watch conversion, not sessions.

  3. Branded search volume. When AI mentions rise, people search your name. This is often the first visible signal.

  4. Impressions against clicks in Search Console. Impressions holding while clicks fall usually means you are being read and summarized rather than lost.

Where to start if you are starting now

Week 1. List the fifty questions your customers actually ask. Take them from your inbox, your chat logs and your sales floor, not from a keyword tool.

Weeks 2 to 6. Answer the top ten properly. One page each, direct answer in the first sixty words, real FAQ block, schema, specific and quotable statements.

Week 7. Baseline your assistant visibility with the twenty prompt spreadsheet, before the new content has had time to work.

Ongoing. Two properly answered questions a month, plus one piece of original data a quarter, plus a steady effort to be mentioned accurately and consistently in places other than your own website.

That is a slower plan than most agencies will sell you. It is also the one that compounds, because a page that becomes the standard answer to a question stays the standard answer for a long time.

Why we publish this

Everything on this page is what we do on our own site. The direct answer at the top, the named sources with dates, the comparison structures, the FAQ blocks, the schema, and the consistent description of the company that appears on every post. This article is an example of its own argument, which is the only kind of marketing advice worth reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization? Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of earning mentions and citations inside answers generated by AI systems such as chatbots and AI Overviews, rather than only ranking in a list of links. It depends on specific, verifiable content, named sources, original data, and consistent descriptions of your brand repeated across many websites.

How is GEO different from SEO? SEO aims at ranking a page in a results list. GEO aims at being named inside a generated answer. SEO rewards relevance and authority signals to a page. GEO rewards extractable substance and corroboration across the web. Both matter, since content that cannot be found also cannot be quoted.

What is answer engine optimization? Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is structuring content so machines can extract complete answers from it: a direct answer in the opening lines, question shaped headings, one idea per section, FAQ blocks, comparison tables and structured data markup.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic? Yes, measurably. Sixty eight percent of United States Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, and click through rates drop by close to sixty percent on searches where an AI Overview appears. The traffic that does arrive from AI sources tends to be lower in volume and higher in intent.

How do jewelry brands get cited by AI assistants? By answering real customer questions completely and specifically, publishing data nobody else has, citing named sources with dates, keeping brand facts identical across every platform, and earning mentions on industry sites, trade publications and partner pages that AI systems read.

How do I measure AI search visibility? Ask the major assistants the twenty questions your customers ask, once a month, and record whether your brand is named. Support that with AI referral traffic segmented by conversion, branded search volume, and the gap between impressions and clicks in Search Console.
